Disney’s High School Musical was first released as a movie in 2006. With its catchy pop tunes and feel-good story, it became an instant hit with teens around the world and catapulted the leading actors to international fame. The following year it was adapted for stage and titled High School Musical on Stage. Twenty years later, High School Musical on Stage has opened at the National Theatre in St Kilda for a limited season. Produced by James Terry Collective, this independent production is a unique, non-replica staging.

Following previous award winning successes, James Terry Collective have again established themselves as a high quality independent production company. This production could easily belong in a commercial theatre in Melbourne’s East End Theatre District.
Doubling as both producer and director, James Terry has delivered an outstanding, high energy production that will satisfy any die-hard High School Musical fan. The stage adaptation stays true to the film, and this production has captured the essence of the characters while still adding its own unique touch. Terry has made some clever directorial choices, with a few surprise elements. Perfectly cast into their roles, the entire ensemble deliver a high energy, flawless performance.
Under the musical direction of David Youings, the band deliver a quality sound and bring those well-loved songs to vibrant life. Sound design by Marcello Lo Ricco works well in the most part. There were a few lines that were difficult to hear early in the show but that was partly due to an overly excited opening night audience.

One of the highlights of this production is the choreography by Callum Marshall and Issy Fox, with several routines eliciting audible gasps from the audience.
The smart set design by Harry Gill works well to make the most of the performance space. A spectacular lighting design by Jason Bovaird matches the high energy of the performances of the cast.
In the role that made Zac Efron an international name, Gabriel Tiller plays Troy Bolton. Tiller is the good-looking basketball playing jock. Tiller is confident and charming, but always likeable. Sophie Kouknas is delightful as Gabriella Montez. She brings a softness and innocence to the character that beautifully balances the confidence and charm of Tiller’s Troy Bolton. The pair share a believable onstage chemistry.

Meg Williams and Josh Gates are brilliant as the theatrical, attention-seeking twins Sharpay and Ryan Evans. With wonderful comedic timing, the pair bring plenty of laughs as the pseudo villains of the story.

Experienced performers Chelsea Plumley and Adam-Jon Fiorentino bring their wealth of experience to the fore as the drama teacher and coach.
Overall, this is a high quality, slick show that will leave you smiling and tapping your toes. Warm-hearted, with a positive and uplifting message of being true to yourself, it’s a great musical for the whole family.

High School Musical on Stage is now playing at the National Theatre in St Kilda.
