Stepping into the Comedy Theatre for In the Heights, you are immediately immersed in the vibrant, exhilarating world of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s debut musical. Before the curtain even rises, the theatre itself becomes a lively “Latino fiesta,” with themed cocktails and fragrant tortilla chips wafting through the theatre, making you feel like you’ve been transported straight to the streets of Washington Heights.

Under the direction of Helpmann Award nominee Luke Joslin, the production is an unforgettable experience that pulses with energy, passion, and heart. Executed by a cast and crew of incredible calibre, it would be extremely difficult to fault the performance, with each actor bringing a vibrant and enthusiastic presence to the stage.

Ryan Gonzalez embodies Usnavi in a charismatic and captivating performance, effortlessly filling the shoes of the show’s writer and original Usnavi, Manuel-Miranda. A standout from the exceptional cast is Olivia Vásquez as Vanessa, who commands the stage with an incredibly powerful voice and presence. Not only does Vásquez dazzle with an incredibly strong set of pipes, she blows the audience away with her dynamic and fiery execution of the choreography. Mariah Gonzalez also shines as Nina Rosario, using her sweet and innocent voice to create an endearing and eager-to-please character. Her performance of “Breath” was delicate and vulnerable, revealing the insecurities of a character who is desperate to make her community proud.

The technical elements of the show are equally impressive. The costumes are fun and vibrant, perfectly matching the lively tone of the production. However, it’s the lighting design that becomes a key storytelling element, rare in many shows but essential here. The design masterfully creates the feeling of being outside, with one particularly magical moment involving the display of fireworks that ruly captivated the audience.

This is all underpinned by the impeccable live orchestra, whose tight performance ensures the infectious hip-hop, salsa, and Latin rhythm resonates throughout the theatre. The dynamic choreography by Amy Campbell is nothing short of impeccable. The choreography feels modern and fresh, beautifully blending contemporary styles with traditional Latina dance to create high-energy acrobatic dance numbers that are a joy to watch.

Following its acclaimed seasons in Sydney and on Broadway, this production is a celebration of community, culture, and the pursuit of dreams. It celebrates the universal experiences of immigrants, and the complex reality of being stuck between two worlds with sensitivity and awareness. With its soulful storytelling and masterful performances, In the Heights is truly a must-see theatrical event that will leave you dancing out of the theatre on a high.
