There is something I need to confess something straight up.
Given my manic daily work schedule, whether via the small screen, talkback radio or live in person, this is the first time I have experienced Sammy J perform in full.
The extended wait, it must be said, has absolutely paid off.
How would I describe The Kangaroo Effect’s bright and brilliant premise?
Sammy J’s newest show plays on the butterfly effect where one significant action somehow unleashes a series of disasters. Part cabaret featuring a handful of original songs (including one about catfishing a fellow comic), self-deprecating humour and a clever whodunnit, these distinct elements build, blend and create an entertaining whole.
The Kangaroo Effect is held together by a single incident, where the star completely misinterprets a fortieth birthday party invitation’s oddly specific dress code. Breaking down his public embarrassment in reverse, viewers are peppered with anecdotal clues how and why this major faux pas took place at all.
Adding to the overall journey, Sammy J highlights key points in a varied career, his hilarious reputation as a prankster, and the terrific mateships and friendly rivalries he has made along the way.
Unpacked in sixty skilful minutes, there was a lot of love last night in the room. Autobiographical in style and flavour, this is a journey designed both for dedicated fans and eager newcomers like me. No detail is left to chance.
A loveable nerd at heart, Sammy J’s show’s incorporates extensive use of pleasing digital animation projected onto a gigantic backing screen. Audience members were able to experience fast fact moments such as an early appearance on Hey, Hey It’s Saturday, an event masquerading as his eighteenth birthday, notable snippets from his family tree, being bluffed into buying a onesie, the origin of the performer’s actual name versus his stage identity, and the above-mentioned celebratory costume blunder in question for themselves.
As I overheard one viewer state after seeing the set they considered how much fun it would have been for Sammy J to put this deliciously complex yet accessible experience together. I have to say I would completely agree.
Playing for one more week until Sunday April 6, The Kangaroo Effect showcases a master at the peak of his craft.
