The Pirates of Penzance

Written by Arthur Sullivan (music) and W.S. Gilbert (libretto), The Pirates of Penzance premiered in New York City in 1879, then opened in London just a few months later in 1880. Countless productions have taken place over the years ever since, but it’s been some time since The Pirates of Penzance have graced the stage in Melbourne. Despite its age, Victoria Opera’s production of The Pirates of Penzance feels as fresh, vibrant and fun as ever.

Artistic Director Stuart Maunder brings out all the charm and humour in this classic tale. Choreographer Elizabeth Hill-Cooper and Revival Choreographer Anna Tsirigotis adding some further hilarious moments.

Richard Roberts clever set design is fun and quirky, adding both laughs and surprises along the way, aided by Roger Kirk’s gorgeous costume design and Trudy Dalgleish’s stunning lighting design.

Under the helm of Conductor James Pratt, the musicians of Orchestra Victoria deliver a rich and glorious sound to Andrew Greene’s reorchestrations that fill the vast space of the Palais Theatre. Sound design is by Samuel Moxham.

Ben Mingay delivers a commanding performance as the swashbuckling Pirate King. Antoinette Halloran is wonderfully cheeky as nursemaid Ruth. Nicholas Jones is delightfully charming as Frederic. Nina Korbe is exquisite in the role of Mable.

Richard Piper is extraordinary as the Major-General Stanley, delivering a masterclass performance in crisp, eloquent diction, yet remaining character-perfect.

Christopher Hillier is delightful as the Sergeant of Police, with Douglas Kelly, Edith Joyce, Alessia Pintabona and Syrah Torii rounding out the supporting cast. A strong ensemble matches the quality of the leading cast.

There’s a reason why Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance is a classic. From the wonderful iconic songs, to the silliness of the storyline, The Pirates of Penzance remains a fun-filled show for all ages, and an ideal introduction for a new generation to the world of not just Gilbert and Sullivan, but also to Victoria Opera.

The Pirates of Penzance is playing for a very short season at the Palais Theatre.
