Rosa McCarty: Queen of CLOC’s Chess

by | Sep 13, 2023

The Queen and her Checkmates

When CLOC Musical Theatre takes to the stage in October with its production of Chess, Rosa McCarty, a mainstay of Melbourne musical theatre, will be revisiting one of her favourite shows and roles as Florence Vassy.

Originally from Adelaide, Rosa has built up an enviable and prolific list of music theatre credits and accolades since moving to Melbourne in 2008.  She has appeared in five previous CLOC productions, including Mamma Mia! (Donna), Wicked (Elphaba) and Mary Poppins (Mary) and in two previous CLOC productions directed by Shaun Kingma (director of Chess) – Aspects of Love (Rose) and Man of La Mancha (Aldonza).

Rosa says the lure of Chess is to portray a strong, intelligent, and powerful female lead, the diversity of music styles and epic score, and the opportunity to work once again with Shaun Kingma and his creative team to bring their artistic and creative vision to life. Added to this is the opportunity to appear for the first time opposite two formidable co-stars, Aaron Taylor (playing Freddie) and Mark Doran (playing Anatoly).

By day, Dr McCarty’s life could not be more different, as she works as a university academic in biomedical science.
