Australia’s premier agricultural comedian, Nick Capper, is sick of reinventing the wheel. Now, at the tender age of 40, he’s got nothing left to lose – it’s time to reinvent the oblong. Don’t be a square, come get geometric.
How would you describe the show to someone who knows very little about it?
It’s about a woman who comes back from being in the army in the future. She then has to go to one of Jupiter’s moons (Io, the most inhabitable one) and fight a bunch of billionaires who’ve created a weird island there which is also a gateway to hell. Nah, just kidding – it’s about getting married, and running out of ideas comedically.
What sets your show apart from others appearing at this year’s SCF, and why should audiences see it?
I wear motocross body armour during the show, I’m the only comedian in the world that isn’t a total wuss.
What about your show are you most proud of?
Did you read my answer above? I WEAR MOTOCROSS BODY ARMOUR!
Who or what was the inspiration for the show?
Andre Agassi. Come to the show to find out why.
How long was the process from idea to writing to stage? Any challenges along the way?
This whole show was very challenging. Last year, I was undergoing cancer treatment, so I had a lot to write about. This year, I don’t have cancer, I’m married, and life is good – hard to find comedic inspiration there. It took me a year and a half to write this show. Plus, I’m right handed and wrote most of it with my left hand – that’s what took up most of my time.
What attracts you to comedy and how long have you been involved?
I love the challenge. There’s nothing more humbling than comedy. You can crush on stage one night, then the next night you’re getting absolutely destroyed by the audience. It’s very humbling. I have been doing comedy since the First Fleet. I performed my first set to the botanist Sir Joseph Banks.
Who would you say have been your biggest inspirations?
Jordan Belfort from The Wolf Of Wall Street. Him, OR perhaps Ned Kelly. Renegades, just like me.
What are three things that would surprise people to learn about you?
- I refuse to use umbrellas (ugly and cumbersome)
- . I eat raw bacon
- I cried during John Wick 4
What comes after the SCF for you?
I will probably go back to my job working in a sock factory.
Comedian Nick Capper is a cult favourite on the Australian comedy circuit, having toured across the country, and has cemented himself as a regular in the festival scene. Self described as Australia’s favourite agricultural comedian, Nick’s oddball antics and off-kilter musings make him stand out from the pack, as he blends his country farm upbringing with absurd and surreal comic delivery.
