Direct from Cripple Creek, Colorado, country music legend Wilson Dixon returns to Melbourne International Comedy Festival for the first time in years. Known to many as the greatest country singer Cripple Creek has ever produced – as well as the only country singer Cripple Creek has ever produced – whichever way you look at it, it’s a pretty good achievement.

How would you describe your show to someone who knows very little about it?
Depends how little they know. Has this person ever been to any kind of live performance? Are they maybe a Golden Retriever with no concept of country music (or music. Or country)? Are they Amish and have lived a technology-free life where lights and amplified sound is a novelty? If it was any of those I’d suggest any description would be pointless and they should give it a miss.
What makes it stand out and why should people see it?
From what I can see it’s the only show consisting entirely of country music and stories from my personal life. I’m not suggesting that’s a selling point but it’s definitely a point of difference.
How long was the process from idea to writing to stage? Any challenges along the way?
About 25 years. The challenge has been growing older on a yearly basis.
What attracts you to comedy?
Laughing
How would you describe your relationship with the audience and what do you love the most about live performance?
I’d say my audience relationship is 99.9% platonic, 0.1% intimate (yet consensual), and what I love the most is how people come along and exchange money for laughing. It’s absurd yet true.
Who would you say have been your biggest inspirations?
My pet owl. He does an all-nighter every single night. Sometimes I join him – he keeps me feeling young. I don’t eat any of the mice though.
