Belvoir presents ‘The Wrong Gods’ – Brand New Play from ‘Counting and Cracking’s’ S. Shakthidharan

by | Apr 8, 2025

Following his smash hits Counting and Cracking and The Jungle and the SeaS. Shakthidharan is back with his new play, The Wrong Gods, presented by Belvoir and co-produced with Melbourne Theatre Company, showing in Sydney (3 May – 1 June) and Melbourne (6 June – 12 July)

Set in a remote valley in India, this play is a mother-and-daughter struggle that asks questions about economic “progress” and our relationship with the planet. Nirmala farms the soil like her ancestors, but her daughter, Isha, wants a city education and the opportunity it promises. Then outsiders arrive in the valley with a large-scale dam project that asks Nirmala and her people to pay a heavy price.

The Wrong Gods has an all-female South Asian cast, including Counting and Cracking’s Radhika Mudaliyar and Nadie Kammallaweera, Bharatanatyam dancer/actor Vaishnavi Suryaprakash and Indian Australian actor Manali Datar (Fangirls, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child).

May 3 – June 1
