Following his smash hits Counting and Cracking and The Jungle and the Sea, S. Shakthidharan is back with his new play, The Wrong Gods, presented by Belvoir and co-produced with Melbourne Theatre Company, showing in Sydney (3 May – 1 June) and Melbourne (6 June – 12 July).
Set in a remote valley in India, this play is a mother-and-daughter struggle that asks questions about economic “progress” and our relationship with the planet. Nirmala farms the soil like her ancestors, but her daughter, Isha, wants a city education and the opportunity it promises. Then outsiders arrive in the valley with a large-scale dam project that asks Nirmala and her people to pay a heavy price.
The Wrong Gods has an all-female South Asian cast, including Counting and Cracking’s Radhika Mudaliyar and Nadie Kammallaweera, Bharatanatyam dancer/actor Vaishnavi Suryaprakash and Indian Australian actor Manali Datar (Fangirls, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child).
