Melbourne’s Iconic Butterfly Club Receives its Grimiest Makeover with Award Winning Comedian Em Barrett , Making Her Australian Debut.

A unique theatrical adventure awaits Melbourne theatre lovers at the iconic Melbourne venue, The Butterfly Club, with award-winning comedian and performer Em Barrett making her Australian debut. Mixing jazz, toilets and humanity’s simmering despair, ”PURE GRIME,” packs a punchy and thought-provoking jab at contemporary humanity, with delightfully funny results. Currently on tour in New Zealand, the show will enjoy a limited run, starting at 7pm, from 14th-19th October.

Two years in the making, this unique comedy found its wings during a residency at Barbarian Productions, founded by multi-award-winning artist Jo Anderson, and later received mentorship from Thomas LaHood.

‘I wanted to explore what it means to be human, and thus, what it means to be a fly’, says Em Barrett , a queer comedian, actor and writer, and founder of New Zealand theatre company, Warped Productions. In “Pure Grime”, Em draws upon French Bouffon clown techniques, a celebration of the grotesque, to shine a light on structural apathy among the rising challenges of climate change.”

The show is being presented with generous support from the New Zealand Fringe Festival, Barbarian Productions and The Butterfly Club. In lieu of rising living costs, the show is able to offer tiered ticket pricing makes it accessible for all Melbourne clown, cabaret and satire lovers to experience New Zealand’s independent queer comedy firsthand, at Melbourne’s longest running cabaret venue.
