Comedy legend Maria Bamford announces 2024 Australian Tour

by | Feb 22, 2024

New York Times best-selling author, actor and multi-award winning comedian Maria Bamford will be bringing her beloved brand of stand up to Australia for a national tour this July!

Bamford’s unique comedy style and sharp observations on family dynamics and human eccentricities has won her praise from peers and audiences the world over. Combining sharp humour with empathy, Bamford’s comedy is unafraid to lean into the personal, as she weaves stories about her life and her own mental health journey in with wickedly funny comedy.

The first female comic to have two half-hour Comedy Central Presents specials, Bamford’s sphere of influence as a stand up has expanded in a big way in recent years. Her most recent special, 2023’s Local Act, has received wide appraise and follows a series of critically acclaimed specials, Weakness Is The Brand (2020), Old Baby (2017) and The Special Special Special (2012), available to view on streaming services Netflix (which also hosts her original series Lady Dynamite) and Amazon Prime. Additionally, Bamford’s extensive discography of comedy albums and web series have certified her status as a multi-talented act.

Along with her own projects, Bamford has lent her voice to various animations including Big Mouth, BoJack Horseman, Bob’s Burgers and American Dad!; while also guest starring in television series including Arrested Development, Portlandia and Kroll Show.

The 2024 Australian tour follows on from what was a busy year for Bamford, both the release of her special and her acclaimed memoir, Sure, I’ll Join Your Cult: A Memoir of Mental Illness and the Quest To Belong Anywhere. A book that explores what it means to persevere, the memoir brought Bamford’s signature style of storytelling and humour together with relatable content and an overarching hope to transform what would otherwise be isolating experiences, into comedy for the reader.

Named as one of 2023’s best releases by both Vulture and NPR, Sure, I’ll Join Your Cult was an instant New York Times best-seller, adding another touchstone achievement to Bamford’s already fleshed out list of accolades.

Along with multiple successes in the US comedy world, Bamford has been a passionate advocate of mental health, and has spoken at various events including the Saks Institute for Mental Health Law, Policy and Ethics Symposium; The Chautauqua Institution and the Psychotherapy Networker Symposium. For her advocacy in this field, Bamford has also been presented with The OCD Foundation’s Illumination Award.
