Dry Land by Ruby Rae Spiegel comes to Theatre Works

by | Feb 8, 2024

Bold and unflinching, Dry Land is about what happens in a girls’ change room after the high school swimming pool has closed.

On the precipice of adulthood, Amy has the chance to make a future for herself beyond her infamous reputation at high school. But when she faces an unplanned pregnancy, Amy must seek help from Ester, an awkward but talented swimmer with as many secrets as Amy. Dry Land by Ruby Rae Spiegel delves into the murky waters of teenage intimacy and reproductive rights.

Director Olivia Staaf describes how audiences are invited into the world of teenage girls, “it’s where everything is simultaneously serious, funny and awkward”. Dry Land is for anyone who has felt the pressure of the transition from high school to beyond. Set in the West Palm Beach area of Florida, the play resonates strongly in an Australian context where abortion was only fully decriminalised in Western Australia in September 2023. Access to reproductive healthcare in Australia remains unnecessarily complex.

For Staaf, Dry Land extends and enriches her relationship with Theatre Works, having been an Associate Artist with the company in 2020 and a dramaturg for the She Writes Program since 2021. The cast of Dry Land features talented VCA alumni including Luce Wirthensohn, Cassidy Dunn, Isabelle Duggan and Endrico Botha. The production team is rounded out by up-and-coming designers Abbey Stanway, Dion Spyropoulous and Tomas Gerasimidis.

flatpack is a recently established collective of artists and scientists who are passionate about creating interdisciplinary creative works that champion care and sustainability in art making. Founded by Olivia Staaf in 2023, flatpack’s values are centered on art-making as a collective endeavour, finding joy in the process, taking a professional approach to art making and upholding respect, access and inclusion. Dry Land is flatpack’s inaugural production and sets a precedent for the company to offer bold storytelling to audiences.
