Et Tu Theatre brings award-winning UK play to Bellingen

by | Sep 3, 2024

Production is underway for independent professional theatre company Et Tu’s next play, The Effect by Lucy Prebble.

Described as “a play for four people, in love and sorrow”, The Effect explores the world of pharmaceutical trials from four different perspectives.

“This play asks deep questions about why we feel love and other emotions, and whether they become more or less real based on what influences our emotional states,” Et Tu Theatre co-founder Amy Bradney-George said.

“It’s beautifully written. Lucy Prebble has given us a whole spectrum of human emotions and behaviour to explore, which is an absolute joy.”

Prebble is an award-winning writer for stage and screen, including three Laurence Olivier Award nominations, three Primetime Emmy Awards for her work on Succession and a BAFTA TV Award nomination for I Hate Suzie. She’s also won three Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards, including Best New Play for The Effect when it premiered in 2012.

On this production, Lucy Prebble said: “Thrilled that Et Tu are staging my play The Effect, a deeply personal work that is filled with love and pain. My heart, their hands.”

“It’s such a privilege to work on a play of this calibre,” Et Tu co-founder Seton Pollock said.

“There’s so much of it that’s relevant to what we’re all seeing in the world today. It makes you wonder how much change actually influences human nature, and if some aspects will always be a part of life.”

This is Et Tu Theatre’s second production in Bellingen, after relocating from Melbourne, and follows a successful Australian premiere of Maz and Bricks by award-winning Irish writer and performer Eva O’Connor in 2023.

“The scope of The Effect is much larger,” Seton Pollock says. “We’re working with a bigger team and drawing on more of the decades of experience we’ve gained as professionals.”

Amy Bradney-George added: “When we moved away from the city, a driving force was being able to bring high-quality productions to this area and to develop the industry opportunities in this region.”

“It’s incredibly exciting to be able to share Lucy Prebble’s brilliant play, The Effect, with audiences here.”

The Effect by Lucy Prebble runs from 3-13 October 2024 at the Bellingen Memorial Hall Studio. For bookings visit https://ettuproductions.com/season
