‘FEMME PLAY [ungrateful slut]’ at The Butterfly Club

Judy Doubas is a fearless feminist writer. Her latest work, FEMME PLAY [ungrateful slut], is set to shake things up with its unapologetic critique of misogyny and political complacency. Directed by Susan Rundle, this sharp, provoca tive production blends humour and biting social commentary with an urgent call for change.

“FEMME” is more than a descriptor – it’s defiant, rejecting traditional femininity for something political, deliberate, and powerful. The title’s second half, [ungrateful slut], confronts the language used to silence women who demand more, exposing deeply entrenched attitudes.

Al and George are two women wrestling with modern pressures – careers, relationships, identity – only to realise their struggles are systemic. As they awaken to the forces shaping their lives, their inner voices Red, a patriarchal mouth piece, and Bling, embodying society’s Madonna/Whore paradox push and pull them in opposing directions, leading them toward political action.

Doubas’ work evolved from personal observation into a wider, urgent conversation about feminism’s ongoing battles. “It became more political when I realised how the world continues to be run by men in suits – Trump’s election, Morrison’s comments in 2021 – it all reinforced that change is urgently needed,” she says.

Rundle says the play is “In-your-face, hilarious, and unapologetic. It doesn’t preach, but it sure makes you think,” she says. With the energy of a Comedy Festival show, the production delivers hard-hitting truths. “The characters of Bling and Red give us these polarising, misogynistic voices, but the writing ensures audiences will leave smiling”.

The Butterfly Club provides the perfect setting. “It’s got that festival feel – accessible, inclusive and deeply meaning ful,” Rundle notes. With misogyny still a global issue, FEMME PLAY arrives as a timely, unflinching response. “Misogyny is scarily rife, especially with what’s happening in the USA and filtering through Australia,” she adds. Unapologetically urgent, FEMME PLAY [ungrateful slut] demands attention.
