La Mama Explorations is a celebrated three-night works-in-development program supporting the next generation of Australian theatre.
Created and developed by award-winning Boorloo/Perth multidisciplinary artist and creative producer Mohammed ‘Ayo Busari’, and produced by Blue Joy Theatre Company, Freedom is an interdisciplinary performance that weaves theatre, live music, spoken word, and movement to explore what it means to seek and reclaim freedom across diasporic Black identities.
Journeying through Nigeria and Australia, the work traces how liberation is shaped by migration, memory, and belonging. At its centre is a dialogue between self and shadow, body and voice, asking not what freedom means in theory, but what it feels like to carry, or search for, it within the body.
Poetic and immersive, Freedom is a work of reflection, resistance, and release.
“In the final act of the show, multi-disciplinary artist Ayo Busari asks, ‘What does freedom look like?’ An apt thesis for this incredible performance that takes you in many directions, without the urgency for a definite answer.” – Leila Marshall, Fringefeed
Following a successful development residency at PICA in Boorloo/Perth, Freedom now travels to Melbourne for its next stage of development and presentation at La Mama.
August 4 – 6
