Gravity Dolls makes its debut with Darebin Arts Speakeasy to perform Future Proof

Award-winning fearless physical theatre company Gravity Dolls makes its debut with Darebin Arts Speakeasy to perform Future Proof  14 – 16 March, Darebin Arts Centre

Darebin team Gravity Dolls make genre-defying theatre that fires the imagination. Combining acrobatics and aerial skills with fierce new writing, their shows push live performance to new heights.

Future Proof delves into a dreamscape reflecting our contemporary world at a crucial juncture. The performance explores themes of systemic challenges, tectonic shifts, and a planet grappling for survival, all while portraying the ordinary struggles of individuals just trying to navigate their daily lives. The ensemble of local physical performers will bring this narrative to life on a revolving platform at Darebin Arts Centre for a three-night engagement.

Written and directed by Harlow Carey, the show incorporates stirring text that adds a poetic dimension to the production. It serves as an invocation of the realities we are waking up to and a call to action for the world we hope to see.

The show has garnered attention following an impressive run at the 2022 Melbourne Fringe Festival, and Darebin Arts Acting Head of Programming Mark Pritchard expresses anticipation for how Future Proof will resonate with the audience. ‘The team are pushing the artform forward in the way they use a circus-trained ensemble to create big theatrical images, combined with stirring poetic text. This show really grapples with what it feels like to be alive right now, as geopolitical, environmental and cultural crises pull up and dislodge our sense of self. Future Proof is ambitious and enthralling, and it’s going to look brilliant on the Darebin Arts Centre stage.’

The production is ambitious and enthralling, tackling the complex landscape of contemporary geopolitical, environmental, and cultural challenges that shape our collective sense of self. Future Proof is not just a display of physical prowess but an exploration of the human experience in the face of current global complexities. It promises to be a visually stunning and thought-provoking experience on the Darebin Arts Centre stage, offering a unique blend of physicality and intellectual engagement.

Founded in 2014, Gravity Dolls has garnered a reputation for their multidisciplinary approach, fusing contemporary circus, physical theatre, and original writing. Under the visionary leadership of Tim Rutty and Harlow Carey, Gravity Dolls has crafted a unique artistic practice rarely seen in Australia. Their debut show, My Life in Boxes, premiered at the Melbourne Fringe Festival in 2014. It won the Original New Circus Award supported by Circus Oz, and runner-up at the Gasworks Circus Showdown. In 2022 Future Proof premiered at Arts Centre Melbourne, commissioned by the Melbourne Fringe Springboard Program.

Gravity Dolls also runs their own artist-run circus studio in Northcote. It is the only artist-run circus studio in Melbourne, and it doesn’t receive any government or philanthropic funding. It is home to a year-round short-course circus program for adults and a number of other programs for professional artists as well as the bi-annual Aerial Arts Festival. Gravity Dolls has created programs designed to support fellow independent artists, with a priority on creating a welcoming environment for marginalised voices. Through their own experience, they understand that affordability, access times and internal culture are contributing factors to certain artists not feeling welcome in training and development spaces. To address this, the Open Training and Rehearsal and Development programs have been designed to create a culture based on inclusivity and diversity.
