Illuminate Adelaide – Superluminal

by | May 10, 2024

Art and science converge at the world premiere of Superluminal, a family-friendly interactive installation from award-winning Patch Theatre that will spark wonder in the enquiring minds of children aged 4 to 8 at the South Australian Museum for Illuminate Adelaide.

With colour-changing lanterns in hand and the magical sounds of nature all around, children and their guardians will explore nature’s extraordinary creatures, systems, and beauty as they are guided by performers through Superluminal’s five interactive spaces. They’ll follow tracks and discover animals from the past, present, and possible future, before creating their own mythical creatures and bringing them to life.

Illuminate Adelaide’s co-founders and creative directors, Rachael Azzopardi and Lee Cumberlidge said: “Patch has been creating exceptional children’s theatre in South Australia since 1972 and are renowned for their ability to weave collaborative storytelling into engaging performances filled with interactive light play; Superluminal is all this – plus it gives kids the chance to get involved in the fun.”

Co-directed by Patch Theatre’s artistic director Geoff Cobham, one of Australia’s most experienced lighting designers, and Zoë Barry – who also composed a unique soundscape for the experience, featuring immersive recordings of nature from around the world – Superluminal gives children the opportunity to explore light and nature in a captivating, hands-on experience that promises to be a memorable visit to the South Australian Museum.

Geoff Cobham, Artistic Director of Patch Theatre said: “Installations are a fantastic way for young children to engage with art and to follow their own impulses within a creative space. We love making theatre for 4 to 8-year-olds but what they really want is to play – to be on stage with us and be part of the action – and Superluminal allows them to do this.”

Featuring exotic sounds of the jungle after dark, frogs, bird calls, and even animals snoring, the soundtrack to Superluminal promises to be as playful and enthralling as the installation itself.

Co-director and composer Zoë Barry said: “We really hope that when children leave this experience and go back into the world, they’ll have a slightly more magical and connected sense of their place within nature and within the whole universe.”

Superluminal opens at the South Australian Museum on Saturday 06 July and runs until Saturday 10 August.

Presented by Patch Theatre in association with South Australian Museum and Illuminate Adelaide.
