Kingston Arts presents Jekyll & Hyde

by | Feb 26, 2025

This April, Kingston Arts presents Jekyll & Hyde, a fast-paced, absurd, and laugh-out-loud version of the classic tale at the Shirley Burke Theatre. Brought to life by the award-winning theatre company A Slightly Isolated Dog, this sassy and interactive adaptation invites audiences to “bring your monster out to play” for an evening of comedy, chaos, and participation.

In this fresh take on the Jekyll & Hyde story, the contrasting attributes of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde take centre stage. Dr. Jekyll, the model of discipline and ethics faces off against Mr. Hyde, whose reckless and chaotic behaviour turns everything upside down. This performance playfully explores the tension between the self that conforms to social norms and the shadow self that longs to break free.

A Slightly Isolated Dog is an award-winning independent theatre company based in Wellington and Auckland making work since 2005 under the artistic direction of Leo Gene Peters. Over the last few years, the company has been exploring how to remove all barriers between audience and performers, to come together as a group of people to laugh together with great warmth at our collective silliness. It is built for non-theatre going audiences as well as adventurous theatregoers through use of transformational venue experience, integration of popular culture and interactivity. Jekyll & Hyde was originally devised by Susie Berry, Jack Buchanan Andrew Paterson, Leo Gene Peters, Jonathan Price, Comfrey Sanders.
