MICF – Alice Tovey: Glass Houses

by | Feb 12, 2025

What happens to a family when dad goes to prison?

Just before her wedding, Alice’s father returned home from prison. Glass Houses is a love letter to family, showing us that love conquers all – even the prison industrial complex. It’s messy, it’s complex and it’s full of undeniable heart.

Between stories of a career criminal baker and a wedding photobooth mishap, Glass Houses dares audiences to care about a world they’ve never known.

Through stand-up, stories and original songs, Tovey blends genres to share moving and bizarre anecdotes that go beyond true crime, showing the reality of what happens to families while their loved ones are locked away.

No stranger to sharing earnest narratives, Alice Tovey (she/they) is an exciting up-and-comer with the credits to prove it. Once a classically trained opera singer, now an alternative cabaret-comedian, she has written for some of Australia’s favourite shows such as Gruen, Question Everything, and The Weekly with Charlie Pickering. Tovey is a regular contributor to The Sydney Morning Herald and has had their work featured in The Guardian, Pedestrian TV and beyond. They are an AWGIE award nominated writer, an award-winning horror film writer-director, multiple Greenroom Award nominee and her parents’ fourth favourite child (Tovey is one of three siblings).

Audiences from all walks of life are welcome to step into Alice Tovey’s family portrait. Together they’ll laugh through the hard times and move forward to a more caring world.
