Timely, powerful and deeply human, Stories from the Waiting Room arrives at a moment when disability voices are too often absent from public discourse. Through lived experience storytelling, the production shifts the focus from disability as a problem to be solved towards the rights, dignity, aspirations and contributions of people with disability.
Co-designed and performed by some of Victoria’s most exciting disabled artists, My Story: Stories from the Waiting Room – Lived Experience of Disability Rights brings authentic experiences to the stage and through the screen in this special Digital Fringe event.
Filmed in the Bowery Theatre and drawing on six powerful stories from a diverse ensemble of disabled artist and embedded Auslan performer, Stories from the Waiting Room is a vibrant contemporary performance featuring spoken word, theatre, movement and an original musical number. Through deeply personal stories, the production explores themes of inclusion, accessibility, self-determination, advocacy and belonging, while shining a light on the rights, experiences and contributions of people with disability. This work was awarded landmark funding by the NDIS quality and Safeguards Commission and has been touring live around regional Victoria.
