THE BOYS IN THE BAND [PLAY]
Exclusive to Melbourne
James Terry Collective has announced it will premiere the Broadway revival of The Boys in the Band, written by Mart Crowley.
“Wildly entertaining. By turns vicious, lacerating and bitingly funny” – The New York Times.
The Tony-Award winning play was first staged in 1968 to critical acclaim, and following the success of its 2018 Broadway revival, the play was adapted to a Netflix film starring Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Andrew Rannels, and Matt Bomer.
“The play masterfully navigates hilarity and heartache” says producer James Terry. “Half a century on, it remains riotously funny and poignant. Audiences today are going to relish this rarely staged work.”
This new Australian production is directed by Alister Smith (Elvis a Revolution, The Wedding Singer, Cruel Intensions the Musical) and will premiere at Chapel off Chapel, exclusive to Melbourne. It is not scheduled to tour beyond its limited season from February 27 –March 9, 2025.
Set in a New York City apartment during the late 1960s, this ground-breaking play captures the raw, unfiltered dynamics of a group of gay men coming together for a birthday celebration that quickly unravels into a night of truth-telling, emotional revelations, and unexpected confrontations.
“Hilarious, and gratifying” – New York Observer
“A wild party, unapologetic, and moving comic drama” – The Hollywood Reporter
The Boys in the Band is both a time capsule of pre-Stonewall LGBTQIA+ life and a timeless reflection on human vulnerability. Whether you are familiar with its historical significance or experiencing it for the first time, this production offers an electrifying theatrical experience that is as entertaining as it is thought-provoking for all audiences.
This production follows James Terry Collective’s Greenroom Award winning musical Kinky Boots (Production of the Year 2023), Next to Normal (2022) starring Queenie van de Zandt, and other acclaimed productions including Legally Blonde, and RENT the Musical.
“If there were ever a time to revisit The Boys in the Band, it’s now. The work feels more resonant than ever” – People Magazine
