From the team that brought you Classifried! The MKUltra Sitcom and Vikings Vs Climate Change comes a brand new untold Aussie story. Melbourne-based theatre company Babble Productions debuts a compelling new production that poignantly explores connection and gender inequality in a unique setting: the side of a busy highway.
How To Hold A Sign delves into the lives of two women, Jackie and Aoife, who, while working a 12 hour traffic control shift on a scorching summer’s day, realise that they couldn’t be more different. As traffic ebbs and flows, however, their friendship evolves and they find themselves caught between obeying the rules and rewriting them.
Equal parts sly comedy and feminist critique, How to Hold a Sign is, above all, a story of solidarity; of two women bonding and surviving in a male-dominated world. It is a love letter to working-class resilience, a comment on systemic inequities and a celebration of the power of connection. With wit and heart, the play invites audiences to linger on the margins, look deeper and discover the complexities that lie in something as deceptively simple as a bright vest and a steady arm.
How To Hold A Sign will hold its world premiere at The Butterfly Club in May, as part of the Drama Queen Festival.
