Following the life of Tom Wingfield as he struggles to balance personal strife with the pressures of his familial duty to his mother Amanda and his sister Laura, Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie is an evocative and poetic memory play which explores the yearning to escape (both into illusion and from the trappings of circumstance) as a response to the weight of family and societal pressures.
Our intimate production strives to offer a profound interpretation of the classic work. Striking a tender balance between staying true to its nostalgic, dreamlike quality, whilst remaining grounded and truthful, the show reveals nuances which continue to resonate with contemporary audiences – especially with respect to the complex understanding of sexuality and gender dynamics. Through detailed performances and a refined visual language, the production highlights the timeless complexities of the human experience, allowing for the portrayal of an empathetic lens for each character.
