Theatre Meets Climate Politics in SCENES FROM THE CLIMATE ERA

by | Apr 25, 2025

Fresh from its world-premiere season at Sydney’s Belvoir St Theatre, acclaimed climate playwright David Finnigan’s stunning theatrical work, Scenes from the Climate Era, makes its hotly anticipated debut at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre, from the 14th May to 17th May 2025.

Set against the backdrop of a changing climate, Scenes from the Climate Era takes audiences through over fifty small plays that catch the exhilaration, frustration and fascination of living in interesting times.

A group of friends reminisce about the last time they took a flight, before all that came to an end. Landholders in Borneo confront western environmentalists over who owns the forest. A frog, the last of its species, starts calling for a mate, but there’s no-one to hear. A family takes to the water, needing a new home, new hope…

Remarkable, illuminating and shocking, Scenes from the Climate Era is a wild race through vignettes exploring an uncertain future of beaches where once there were none, travelling the world when aeroplanes are gone, oh, and zombie mice.

Australian writer, climate expert, and winner of the 2021 Green Room Award for Best Writing, David Finnigan (Griffin Theatre Company’s Kill Climate Deniers) is joined by Resident Director at Belvoir Carissa Licciardello (Belvoir’s A Room of One’s Own), who leads the production.

“This play is an unflinching portrayal of a world in crisis, but also a celebration of the resilience of humanity and our ability to come together and confront challenges,” said Director Carissa Licciardello.

The dynamic cast includes Violette Ayad (Ensemble Theatre’s Nearer the Gods), Nic English (Seymour Centre & Outhouse Theatre Co’s Consent), Meg Hyeronimus (Belvoir 25A’s Shitty), Abbie-Lee Lewis (Belvoir’s Counting and Cracking) and Brittany Santariga (Outhouse Theatre Co & Red Line Productions’ How to Defend Yourself).

Equal parts comedic and thought-provoking, but never wagging its finger in audiences’ faces, Scenes from the Climate Era is a play about now – about the choices we made yesterday, and the difficult beauty of tomorrow.
