World premiere of genre-bending tale in LEGENDS (of the Golden Arches)

by | Dec 30, 2024

Perth Festival audiences can delight in the explosive world premiere of LEGENDS (of the Golden Arches) at Studio Underground, as an unexpected and often hilarious journey unravels the bonds of friendship, culture and redemption, Fri 21 – Mon 24 Feb.

This rip-roaring ride finds besties Joe and Merlynn up all night holding vigil for their dead grandfathers. Merlynn is trying to remember the rituals and wants Joe to join her in performing the rites. Joe, frustrated with tradition, thinks it’s just a load of superstition. The lords of the Underworld have their own thoughts on all of this, and they’re going to drag our heroes into the depths of the Chinese afterlife to resolve their differences.

Co-created by Joe Paradise Lui and Merlynn Tong, with a strong team of creatives representing the Asian diaspora, LEGENDS is a powerful and deeply personal examination of an Asian cultural experience and the enduring power of friendship.

Perth Festival Artistic Director Anna Reece says:

“We love to support new and independent Australian theatre at Perth Festival and are so delighted to co-commission and premiere Joe Paradise Lui and Merlyn Tong’s LEGENDS here in February. This is storytelling at its best – sharp and satirical, fearless, touching yet wildly entertaining.”

LEGENDS (of the Golden Arches) is produced by Performing Lines WA. This project has been commissioned by Perth Festival, RISING, and Brisbane Festival.
