A brand-new play from award-winning writer Cassandra- Elli Yiannacou that looks at the ethics of our true-crime obsession.
In a quiet community hall during a support group for ex- cult members, a brutal murder takes place. Years later a true crime podcast delves into what caused the group to turn against each other. Witness live re-enactments of the meetings from never-before-heard transcripts, which lead up to the event commonly referred to as ‘The Corner Hall Witch Trial’ – complete with Squarespace ads, of course! But as the harrowing story begins, the victim wants to re-write her story.
Fresh off their Sydney debut this year with Cassandra’s play The 13th Month, which Sydney Arts Guide called “A satire night fever!” Wildefang are back in Melbourne to premier this meta In Cold Blood.
“I’ve become increasingly aware of the presence true crime plays in our entertainment and examining my own relationship to it. Working in media I know the ‘if it bleeds it leads’ mentality, but seeing how we eat up the tragedy of someone who can never tell their own story is interesting ethical conundrum. The whole cast are true crime fans so it’s something we’ve felt compelled to reflect on,” Cassandra said.
